The Perfect Crime Goes Wrong In New Trailer For 'Kidnapping Mr. Heineken'

kmhIf movies have taught us anything, it’s that anyone who thinks they’ve plotted the perfect crime will have karma come swiftly around the corner to remind them things don’t always work out as planned. And the fates certainly conspire against the gang in the upcoming crime thriller “Kidnapping Mr. Heineken.” With the added flavor of a based-on-a-true-story tale, you can go on the run with this one today as the first trailer has arrived.

Anthony Hopkins, Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, and Ryan Kwanten team up for the latest from “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” filmmaker Daniel Alfredson. The story follows a group or criminals who snatch up the titular beer baron and hold him for ransom, and then….well, let’s just say they’re probably going to need a few stiff drinks when this is all over. Here’s the official synopsis:

In 1983, a group of childhood friends pulled off the crime of the century: kidnapping one of the richest men in the world, the heir of the Heineken beer empire (Anthony Hopkins). The shocking capture–by gunpoint in broad daylight on the streets of Amsterdam–resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for a kidnapped individual. It was truly the perfect crime…until they got away with it.

Dustin Hoffman gets charitable at Toronto gala event

dustin-hoffman-cc-charity-212x320Dustin Hoffman showed off his philanthropic side last night by offering to match donations at a gala event at Toronto’s Trump Hotel, honoring his new film Boychoir, which premiered at TIFF the same night. Dustin made the announcement after hearing that the event host, Creative Coalition, was an arts advocacy organization for arts education and anti-bullying.

“I will match the donations of every person that donated tonight,” Dustin told an appreciative audience.

Joining Dustin at the event were co-stars Eddie Izzard, Josh Lucas, director François Girard and Glee’s Kevin McHale, who also attended the red carpet premiere. Eddie made waves of his own at the event, jokingly suggesting that awards should be judged on their ability to be used as weapons. At least, we hope he was joking.

Meanwhile, Kevin braved the rain to return to the premiere stage after the screening.

There’s no word yet on how much money was raised at the event, which was presented by AMC. Hoffman will have to wait to see how much he’ll be giving.

Toronto: Dustin Hoffman “Boychoir” Could Be Big Holiday Hit

Some big studio or distributor will snatch up “Boychoir” today and have a big Christmas or Easter hit. Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Eddie Izzard and some precocious young men are superb in Francois Girard’s film about the American Boychoir, a real and famous school that tours around the world.

Of course, the music — all choral– is a salve, gorgeously produced and wonderful to listen to.

Dustin-Hoffman-Yale-1200-700x352The story– with Josh Lucas in a subplot as the main boy’s father– is a little contrived but it works. And Lucas is quite good as the dad who never wanted this kid and keeps him a secret from his family.

The main boys are played by Garrett Wareing (Stet) who comes to Boychoir as a juvenile delinquent who can sing like an angel– and Joe West, the angelic little kid who’s been the star and now turns a little evil to defend his position in the choir.

So guess what? Joe West is the son of Maura West, Emmy winning soap opera actress currently turning “General Hospital” into chaos as a beautiful 40s style female mobster. When I saw her in Roy Thompson Hall last night my first instinct was to call the police or duck. Her “GH” character means business. She told me Joe was her son, and that she has five kids! This one doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Anyway back to “Boychoir”: Kathy Bates wasn’t here last night but she got a big reaction from the audience. The screenplay throws her a lot of good lines, and she never fails to land them. Izzard is fine but a little flat because of the role. If you know his work, the real Eddie Izzard is a star. Hoffman plays the “Mr. Holland” character in this opus. It’s always instructive to watch him work. He is flawless in his delivery.

Again, a warm, welcoming movie, great family fare in the best way, sensational music.

Toronto: Judy Cairo Heads Back to Fest With ‘Boychoir’

judy-cairoDuring the height of the recession, producer Judy Cairo managed to break into the feature film business with a smallish indie called “Crazy Heart” through her Informant Media banner.

Since “Crazy Heart” became a major hit with Oscars for lead actor Jeff Bridges and the song “The Weary Kind,” Cairo’s been able to keep Informant in the business — so much so that she’s making her third trip the Toronto film Festival following “Hysteria” in 2011 and “Stuck in Love” in 2012.

Cairo, Carol Baum and Jane Goldenring are at TIFF this year with another music-based drama, “Boychoir,” starring Dustin Hoffman with Francois Girard (“The Red Violin”) directing. Informant is financing and producing. CAA is handling domestic sales; Embankment has international.

“It does give you confidence as a producer to get chosen for Toronto,” Cairo said. “They are great tastemakers.”

The story centers on a troubled 11-year-old who finds himself at an East Coast school, where he engages in a battle of wills with a demanding choir master, played by Hoffman. Eddie Izzard, Debra Winger, Josh Lucas, Kevin McHale and Garrett Wareing also star.

Embankment Films sold out most international markets at last year’s AFM — something Cairo credited to Hoffman’s appearance. She also praised his ability to make more of the character, above and beyond Ben Ripley’s script.

“Dustin has such a strong sense of improvisation,” she said. “During one scene, he started talking about Handel and opportunities and everyone on the set was in tears.”
