Debra Winger, Eddie IzzardJosh Lucas and Kevin McHale are joining the cast of “The Red Violin” director Francois Girard’s music-themed drama, “Boychoir,” with a trio of newcomers — Garrett Wareing, Joe West and River Alexander — set to play the film’s three most prominent student singers.

Dustin Hoffman and Kathy Bates have been previously announced to topline the original film, for which “Source Code” writer penned the script.

Set in present day New England, “Boychoir” follows a troubled 12-year-old boy (Wareing), who is enrolled in a boychoir school modeled after the real-life American Boychoir School in Princeton, N.J. He’s pitted against a demanding choir master, played by Hoffman, with Bates playing the school headmistress and Winger, a school principal.

Judy Cairo, Carol Baum and Jane Goldenring of Informant Media are producing. Exec producers are Michael A. Simpson, Eric Brenner and Ben Ripley.

Casting director and co-producer John Papsidera conducted a worldwide search for the principal school boys.

Embankment Films represents international sales and has already pre-sold over 30 territories including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Australia and all Latin America. The film began production on Feb. 24 in Connecticut.

Newcomers Garrett Wareing, Joe West and River Alexander have also been cast in the film, which Francois Girard (“The Red Violin”) is directing from an original screenplay by Ben Ripley (“Source Code”).

Story follows Stet (Wareing), a troubled and angry 12-year-old from the wrong side of the tracks who ends up at a Boy Choir school, which is fashioned after the actual American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey.

Completely out of his element, Stet finds himself in a battle of wills with a demanding Choir Master (Hoffman) who recognizes a unique talent in the young boy as he pushes him to find his creative heart and soul in music.

Alfred Molina was previously attached to co-star in the movie, though Izzard will now play a teacher who serves as Hoffman’s right-hand at the school.

Lucas will play Stet’s estranged father, while McHale will play a young music teacher who champions the boy. Winger will play the principal of Stet’s school in Odessa, Texas, while West and Alexander will play members of the choir.

“Boychoir” is being financed and produced by Informant Media, whose Judy Cairo (“Crazy Heart”) will produce with Carol Baum (“The Good Girl”) and Jane Goldenring. Informant’s Michael A. Simpson and Eric Brenner will executive produce with Ripley. Casting director John Papsidera of Automatic Sweat will serve as co-producer. Principal photography started Feb. 24 in Connecticut.

Informant is currently in post-production on “Kidnapping Freddy Heineken,” which stars Anthony Hopkins, Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten.

The Red Violin director Francois Girard’s indie drama Boychoir has added Debra Winger, Josh Lucas, Eddie Izzard andKevin McHale, alongside star Dustin Hoffman. The Informant Media film features newcomer Garrett Wareing as the angry young boy who is completely out of his element in the new school and finds himself in a battle of wills with a demanding choir master Carvelle (Hoffman) who recognizes a unique talent in the kid and pushes him. Lucas will play the boy’s estranged father, with McHale as a young music teacher who champions the kid. Winger will play the principal at the boy’s Texas school, and Izzard is a teacher at the new school who is Carvelle’s right-hand. (Alfred Molina originally was set to play the role but withdrew because of scheduling conflicts.) Joe West and River Alexander also star as fellow choristers, and Kathy Bates has a supporting role as the school’s headmistress. Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman is set to star alongside Alfred Molina and Kathy Bates in the indie drama “Boychoir,” which Francois Girard (“The Red Violin”) will direct from an original screenplay by Ben Ripley (“Source Code”).

Story follows Stet, a troubled and angry 11-year-old from the wrong side of the tracks who ends up at a Boy Choir school. Completely out of his element, he finds himself in a battle of wills with a demanding Choir Master (Hoffman) who recognizes a unique talent in this young boy as he pushes him to find his creative heart and soul in music.

Molina will play a teacher at the school, while Bates will play its headmistress.

The filmmakers are currently looking for a young boy with both dramatic and musical talent to play Stet.

Singers from the renowned American Boychoir School, one of the world’s most prestigious boy choirs, will be featured in the film, which is scheduled to start principal photography in February in Connecticut and New York.

“Boychoir” is being financed and produced by Informant Media, whose Judy Cairo (“Crazy Heart”) will produce with Carol Baum (“The Good Girl”) and Jane Goldenring. Informant’s Michael A. Simpson and Eric Brenner will executive produce with Ripley. Casting director John Papsidera of Automatic Sweat will serve as co-producer.

Embankment Films is handling foreign sales and will introduce the film to international distributors at next week’s American Film Market.

Informant is currently in production on “Kidnapping Freddy Heineken,” which stars Anthony Hopkins, Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten. The film is also repped for sales at AFM by Embankment.

Hoffman recently wrapped Jon Favreau’s “Chef” and made his directorial debut with “Quartet,” which grossed nearly $60 million worldwide.  He’s also scheduled to film the adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “Esio Trot” opposite Judi Dench.

Molina will play Drake, a teacher at the school; Bates will portray the school’s headmistress.

The film is being financed and produced by Informant Media. Informant Media’s Judy Cairo, Carol Baum and Jane Goldenring are producing. Michael A. Simpson, Eric Brenner and Ben Ripley are executive producing.

Embankment Films is handling international sales and will sell the film at the American Film Market, which begins Nov. 6 in Santa Monica.

Molina, a prolific voice actor, appeared in Monsters University and Rango, and also had roles in live-action films The Forger and Abduction. He’s repped by WME and Hyler Management.

Bates is starring on the current season of American Horror Story and will appear in the upcoming film Tammy. She’s repped by ICM Partners.
